Conquering the Summit - and Covid-19

September 2020: The ninth Conquer The Summit (CTS) Fun Run proved to be the largest ever, with 325 runners and walkers.

The event raised approximately $20,000, with the majority of proceeds earmarked for Operation Flinders (OF) to sponsor a life-changing wilderness trek for youths from the Adelaide Hills. It is expected that the balance of proceeds will benefit the CFS and victims of the Cudlee Creek bushfire.

This year saw the introduction of two new categories - 10km Walk and 20km Run - alongside the traditional 10km Run (Mt Barker town to Mt Barker Summit). All three categories proved very popular.

In addition, the 10km route acquired some extra colour and challenge in 2020 with the inclusion of the 'Whinery Hill' segment through Ngeringa Vineyard/Winery and Ukaria Cultural Centre on Williams Road. The accompanying picture shows mother-of-six Brianna McAvaney gamely tackling Whinery Hill with friends - and two very young children!

Originally scheduled for March 28, the event was postponed five months to Sunday, August 30 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was conducted under approved Covid-Safe protocols, including wave starts of runners and walkers to maintain social distancing as far as practicable.

Inaugurated in 2012, Conquer The Summit has been run for the past three years as a full partnership between the Mt Barker Lions Club and Mt Barker Rotary Club under the leadership of Brian Haddy.

Conquer The Summit climbs another mountain

July 2019: This year's Conquer The Summit (CTS) Fun Run raised $15,030 for Operation Flinders (OF), matching its record success in 2018.

The donation to Operation Flinders will sponsor a life-changing wilderness trek for up to 10 at-risk youths from the Adelaide Hills.

Held this year on Sunday, March 30, the event attracted a record 280 entries, compared with 275 in 2018. Runners tackled a challenging route of 10km from Mt Barker (Homemaker Centre) to Mt Barker Summit, a vertical rise of approximately 150 metres.

The accompanying photo shows the official cheque presentation at Auchendarroch on July 23. Pictured from right to left are Operation Flinders representative Jonathon Robran, Lions President Brian Duff and Rotary President Shiralee Judge. The Event Director was Brian Haddy (not pictured).

This was the eighth year for Conquer The Summit, which was inaugurated in 2012. It was also the second year the event has been run as full partnership between the Mt Barker Lions Club and Mt Barker Rotary Club under the leadership of Brian Haddy.

Conquer The Summit scales new heights in 2018

July 2018: This year's Conquer The Summit (CTS) Fun Run was the most successful yet. With revenue of approximately $25,000, the event raised $15,030 for Operation Flinders (OF) and a further $2000 for local charities. This is easily the largest amount raised by CTS since its inception in 2012.

The donation to Operation Flinders will sponsor a life-changing wilderness trek for up to 10 at-risk youths from the Adelaide Hills.

Held this year on Sunday, April 8, the event attracted a record 275 entries. Runners tackled a challenging route of 11km from Keith Stephenson Park to Mt Barker Summit, a vertical rise of approximately 150 metres.

Club president Brian Duff said the success vindicated a revitalised strategy and management team. For the first time in 2017-18, Conquer The Summit was managed as a full partnership between the Mt Barker Lions and the Rotary Club of Mount Barker, with specialist support from the South Australian Roadrunners Club (SARRC).

The accompanying photo shows the official cheque presentation at Auchendarroch on July 25. Pictured from right to left are Mayor Anne Ferguson, Lions President Brian Duff, Rotary President Shiralee Judge, former Operation Flinders participant Connor Mansell, Operation Flinders representative Jonathon Robran, and CTS Event Director Brian Haddy (independent).

    Conquer The Summit raises $6000

July 2016: The 2016 Conquer The Summit (CTS) Fun Run has raised $6000.

Of this amount, $4500 was donated to Operation Flinders (OF) to sponsor 3 local youths for this life-changing wilderness trek. The cheque was presented on July 27 to Operation Flinders volunteer Craig Scott by Mt Barker Lions President Lorraine Butcher. Craig, a policeman by profession, gave a fascinating talk about his experiences as an OF team leader.

The remaining $1500 will be invested by YMCA Adelaide Hills in local sporting and welfare projects.

CTS 2016 was held on April 10 and attracted approximately 140 runners and walkers. It was the fifth year for this annual event, and the largest amount raised to date.

The YMCA joined the Mt Barker Lions as a partner for the 2016 event. The two organisations are now jointly planning the next CTS, to be held on April 9, 2017. For updates, inquiries or further details, please visit www.conquerthesummit.org.au.

Mt Barker Lions elect first female President

June 2016: Two months after celebrating its 40th birthday, the Lions Club of Mount Barker elected its first female President.

Lion Lorraine Butcher (above left) was sworn in by District Governor Dave Thomas (centre) to succeed Rob Kairl (right).

Lorraine and Dave thanked Rob for his leadership and tireless hands-on contribution over the previous two years (2014-16), including:

    • establishing the Linear Trail Watch project (2015)
    • coordinating a Cancer Screening weekend (March 2016 - see article below)
    • overseeing the introduction of the Club's website (2014) and Facebook page (2015).

The handover ceremony was held at Auchendarroch as a joint event with the Battunga Country Lions Club, which covers the townships of Meadows, Macclesfield and Echunga.

In his farewell speech, Rob took the opportunity to thank three local businesses for their exceptional support for the Club:

    • Hills Hire for provision of storage space for the club's BBQ trailer
    • Reid Print for printing of Club stationery and provision of after-hours meeting space
    • Auchendarroch for 'going the extra mile' in hosting the Club's monthly dinner meetings.

  • Lions cancer screening may have saved several lives

March 2016: Over the weekend of March 12-13, the Lions sponsored a free Cancer Screening weekend at Summit Health Centre, adjacent to the Mt Barker Soldiers Memorial Hospital.

A total of 156 people were examined for skin cancer by 3 screeners working around the clock, 9am to 4pm daily.

Of these, 30 were referred to a GP with suspected lesions, including 19 classified as potentially life-threatening.

The three cancer screeners - all expert volunteers - included Colin Beauchamp, chairman of the Lions Cancer Institute.

The event was heavily over-subscribed, and Mt Barker Lions President Rob Kairl said his one regret was
turning away people after the event was booked out.

The event was a joint initiative of the Lions clubs of Mt Barker, Nairne, Hahndorf, Strathalbyn and Battunga (Meadows, Macclesfield and Echunga). In addition to organising and sponsoring the event, Lions members were rostered on at the front desk to welcome participants and ease the burden on clinic staff.

The Lions wish to thank Summit Health for their generous support of the 2016 cancer screening.

  • Conquer The Summit now available in two sizes

November 2015: The fifth annual Conquer The Summit Fun Run will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2016 - this time with a difference!

The Mount Barker Lions are teaming up with YMCA Adelaide Hills to offer a more family-friendly fun run in 2016.

Runners and walkers in 2016 will have a choice of two distances. The new 5km route will be a circuit of the Laratinga Wetlands, starting and finishing at Keith Stephenson Park. Meanwhile, as in previous years, the 11km route will run from Keith Stephenson via Laratinga to Mt Barker Summit.

In keeping with the family-friendly theme, the entry fee will be discounted for the 5km route. Family discounts will also apply to both routes.

Registrations for Conquer The Summit will open in early 2016. For updates, inquiries or further details, please visit www.conquerthesummit.org.au.

    Mount Barker's green guardians

October 2015: The Mount Barker Lions held their inaugural Linear Trail Watch working bee on Sunday, October 18.

The club plans to run regular working bees to maintain the town's Linear Walking Trail, with an emphasis on:
    • collecting and disposing of litter
    • small-scale weed removal and shrub maintenance
    • maintenance of bench seats
    • maintenance of the wooden carvings adjacent to the Trail.

Linear Trail Watch has been developed in close consultation with the Mount Barker District Council. Lions signs have been posted along the Trail to mark off the agreed sections covered by the project.

Trail maintenance doesn't come for free, even for Lions volunteers. The Council has kindly agreed to provide materials for maintaining seats and statues (paints, oils, brushes), while the Club covers the cost of rubbish collection (tongs, vests, disposable gloves). Two pairs of tongs are visible in the photo (held by seated members, foreground).

Linear Trail Watch is the brainchild of Club President Rob Kairl, one of the Trail's regular recreational users. Rob described the project as an exciting way for the club to give back to the local community.

Since 2014, every Lions club worldwide has been encouraged to adopt at least one 'green' project in their local community.

And the winner is ... Operation Flinders

July 2015: The Lions Club of Mount Barker donated $4500 to Operation Flinders - sufficient to sponsor 3 young people in this award-winning intervention program for at-risk youth.

The $4500 donation was funded from the proceeds of the 2015 Conquer The Summit (CTS) Fun Run, which attracted 173 runners and walkers on April 12 this year.

The 2015 event returned a total of $5000 to the community, including donations of $250 to the Strength For Life program and $250 to the Mount Barker Men's Shed.

The image at left shows CTS Director (and Mount Barker Lion) Tony Anderson (right) presenting a cheque for $4500 to Operation Flinders Manager Brian Haddy (left).

Planning has now commenced for the next Conquer The Summit in April 2016.

Brightening the lives of older citizens

June 2015: The Mt Barker Lions donated a Digital Resource Package (DRP) to Sash Ferguson retirement home, Mt Barker.

The DRP comprises 3 electronic photo albums, each providing a rotating display of pictures chosen by residents of Sash Ferguson. Two of the albums will be shared by residents, while the third will be lent out to residents and friends.

Throughout Australia, digital albums have proved very effective in improving the health and happiness of older citizens - brightening lives, sparking conversations, reviving memories, and easing troubles and tensions.

Pictured holding a boxed DRP are Lion Deane Evans (centre left) and Lion Michele Brown (centre right), a registered nurse. They are flanked by Sash Ferguson's Director of Nursing Trish Leschen (right) and Lifestyle and Volunteer Coordinator Pauline Conlay (left).

Public seating in memorial of late Lion

June 2015: The Mt Barker Lions commissioned the Mt Barker Men's Shed to construct a bench seat and install it at the IGA supermarket (Wellington Rd, Mt Barker).

Since opening its Mt Barker store, IGA has been a consistent and loyal supporter of the Mt Barker Lions.

The bench seat is dedicated to the late Ron Newlands (1933-2009), a local vet and Secretary (2001-03) of the Mt Barker Lions. Seated here are Ron's widow Pat Newlands, herself a former Lions Secretary (2011-13), and Rob Kairl, President of the Mt Barker Lions.

Double-headed help for Tour Down Under 2015

Each year, we do our bit for the Tour Down Under (TDU) international cycle race through the Adelaide Hills, Barossa valley and Fleurieu Peninsula.

This year was no different. In collaboration with SA Police, our volunteer marshals were posted at road intersections on two different stages of the race:

    • Stage 2 (Wed Jan 21) - Unley to Stirling
    • Stage 4 and BUPA Challenge (Fri Jan 23) - Glenelg to Mt Barker

The Mt Barker finish (Stage 4) made the 2015 event extra special. We assisted with catering throughout the day (6am to 4pm), donating dozens of hours to provide meals, snacks and drinks to cyclists and visitors.

The catering initiative was a collaborative effort with neighboring Lions clubs (Hahndorf, Strathalbyn, Nairne, Battunga Country) and other service clubs (Rotary, Apex, RSL). It was a pleasure to witness the camaraderie between the various local organisations.

Work on this project commenced in May 2014, and the (partially complete) website went live in mid-May.

Summit Conquered: Charity fun run proves a big success

Sunday, April 27: The 2014 Conquer The Summit Fun Run [local page] [dedicated website] was a great success, with over 175 registered runners. It was also generously supported by numerous local businesses, clubs and public bodies. Total contributions in cash and kind are estimated at over $15,000.

The winners' awards were presented by one of the runners: the Hon Jamie Briggs MP (photo, standing at far left), Federal member for Mayo and Infrastructure Minister in the Abbott government.

The Fun Run raised a total of $5000, shared between two charities as follows:

    - $4500 for the Operation Flinders Foundation, which runs life-changing treks in the Flinders Ranges for troubled and at-risk youths. This donation enabled 3 local young people to participate in Operation Flinders.
    - $500 for Strength For Life, a health and fitness program for older citizens. The one-off donation assisted with the introduction of Strength For Life to the Mount Barker district.
